The Auger/Mill RoomThis 5' x 8' mill room is where the brewing process begins. First we pick up our malt from a storage area and deliver it to the brewery. We put the bags of malt in the mill room, close the door, put on a respirator, and fill the silver hopper through the rectangular hole in the top. When we are ready to mash in, we turn on the auger (the white tube in the picture) and then the mill. The mill cracks each malted grain into a few pieces and spits it out of the husk. The cracked malt is pulled by the auger over to the mash tun. We close the door of the room to keep the dust from going out into the brewery (and we wear the respirator to keep the dust from filling our lungs!). So far this has been very successful (cough cough). |
